Francie (60+) my beautiful long “not-seen” cousin from Australia came to visit me in NYC. Asked about having a portrait taken, this is what she responded. “Definitely not - my initial reaction was to decline! It was too confronting. I felt nervous and exposed. I didn’t want to see myself. Who would want a picture of me? I began to relax when hanging out with you, Susie. Your pictures of @women.60.plus inspired me. There are very few pictures of me anywhere and I thought, why not have a good one of me?! I assisted Susie on a photoshoot. I could see how her sitter Iris started out nervous, but she had the courage to step up and do it. And then she relaxed. Her pictures were stunning and she loved them. I could see in Iris feeling better about herself, a shift from self-doubt. My turn! I was slightly anxious and happy to go with whatever happened. Through the shoot, I saw some of the pictures - I could see what you were seeing! Your encouragement, your enthusiasm and your spontaneity made me feel comfortable. I really enjoyed this experience. I love the picture of me. I look great, healthy, happy and open. I feel SO MUCH better about myself. It has helped my self-confidence, personal development, self-esteem and awareness. I am OK as I am! This has been a gift to myself on SO many levels. I had some trepidation, not about her, but because I’m a bit of a judgmental perfectionist about myself in photos. I knew in my heart that she would “capture me”. That she would capture the best of me-the person I feel I am inside- the person I want the world to meet. From the very first moment I felt at ease. We laughed and joked and Susie was genuinely encouraging. I would have been pleased with two or three photos that I felt depicted me, but I got so much more!
